Bleeding in the Eye: Understanding Subconjunctival Hemorrhages

Seeing a bright red patch in the white part of your eye can be alarming. While it may look serious, a subconjunctival hemorrhage is usually harmless and often resolves on its own. At 3 Pairs Optical, we believe understanding eye conditions helps reduce unnecessary worry.

What Is a Subconjunctival Hemorrhage?

A subconjunctival hemorrhage occurs when a tiny blood vessel breaks just beneath the conjunctiva—the clear surface covering the white part of your eye. Blood becomes trapped, creating a red or dark patch that can look dramatic but typically does not affect vision or cause pain.

Despite its appearance, a subconjunctival hemorrhage is often compared to a bruise on the skin—noticeable, but usually not dangerous.

Common Causes

These small blood vessel breaks can happen for many everyday reasons, including:

  • Sudden coughing, sneezing, or vomiting
  • Eye rubbing or minor eye trauma
  • Heavy lifting or straining
  • High blood pressure
  • Blood-thinning medications
  • Occasionally, no identifiable cause at all

Symptoms to Expect

Most people experience no pain or vision changes. The main symptom is the visible red patch, which may spread slightly before slowly fading over one to two weeks.

Do You Need Treatment?

In most cases, treatment is not required. The blood is naturally absorbed by the body over time. Artificial tears may help if your eye feels dry or irritated, but they will not speed up healing.

Seek professional advice if the bleeding occurs frequently, is accompanied by pain or vision changes, or follows a significant eye injury.
